Firstly, I want to start off by saying people who are using our acne solution (Francis Ave Skincare) have experienced this at a much lesser and more manageable degree than those using other topical or oral solutions.
Which is why, I want to address this and invite people to comment on their experiences with other products.
Why do some products cause acne to get worse before it gets better?
Understanding your pores and skin
When material builds up in your pores they can become clogged. When this happens a microcomedone, (the bacteria that resides in the pores and develops acne) is formed under the top layer of your skin (the epidermis). As weeks go by microcomedone’s feed off your sebum and develop into acne. Sebum (produced by your sebaceous glands) is responsible for keeping your hair and skin moisturized but hormones can cause your skin to over produce sebum and can lead to acne.
Starting a new skincare product can cause microcomedone’s to work faster to push through the top layer of your skin and form a pimple. Additionally, some products can also cause skin to become dry and itchy, which is a recipe for breakouts.
Why does this take so long to clear?
The stratum germinativum, also known as the basal layer of our skin is responsible for the generation of new skin cells, it sits below the surface of our skins top layer, the epidermis. It’s job is to constantly produce, or germinate new cells (hence the name). The new cells push up the old cells to the surface of the skin where they shed or are exfoliated.
Skin cells can live for up to 3 weeks before they die and are replaced (age can change the length of the cells lifecycle), which is why it takes time for acne to get better. It’s important to note that these products are suppose to bring acne already in the making to the surface.
Some active ingredients in products can help expedite cell turnover. If its seems like new acne is developing, it could be a bad reaction to the new skincare product and you should consult your dermatologist or skincare consultant directly.
Active ingredients in over the counter or prescription products can include: Benzoyl peroxide Salicylic acid Alpha hydroxy acids Sulfur Glycolic acid Retinoids
Our skincare products are designed to fight bacteria that creates acne, rapidly (within days) heals and repairs broken skin, scars, blemishes, and keeps your skin clear, healthy, and hydrated.
